At JetKids, we love to travel. Having children hasn't stopped us from traveling but it has certainly made it more of a challenge.
The idea behind JetKids started in 2008 when Christina & Halvor were flying long haul with their young daughter. Getting her to sleep on the plane was easier said than done and they ended up sacrificing their space as she spread herself out across the seat row and themselves. Neither was it comfortable, and although not strictly required: Using the seat belt in this position was not possible either.
After the their first unfortunate flying experience with their young one, they started their research. It seemed to be a common problem for parents flying with children. Some parents solved this by letting their children sleep on the cold floor. Some parents let their children sleep partly on them and partly on their own seat - meaning they couldn’t move for the next 9 hours. Some parents put lots of stuff, like suitcases, pillows and blankets in front of the seat to extend the seat. This required too much work and too many items.
They both agreed that there needed to be an easier and better way to solve this. An idea was born and prototypes were developed.
One of the first ideas was to create an inflatable product that fills up the empty space in front of the seat. However this idea was quickly thrown away since inflatable devices inside a pressurized aircraft cabin could cause problems. Additionally, it wasn’t very practical.
So instead they developed some simple prototypes of a collapsible platform that did the same purpose. They lent the prototypes to flying parent and their kids, and receive positive and enthusiastic replies in return. Just what they needed!
Yet the problem was still not completely solved. You already have your hands full carrying so many kids “flying gadgets” and other stuff when flying with children. So giving parents one more thing to carry was not exactly ideal.
Instead, with the help of great designers from Frost Product, and helpful people from Innovation Norway, they decided to make an aviation inspired, premium quality, ride-on suitcase, that is within carry-on dimensions. The whole thing was topped up with integrating a patented bed/leg-rest feature. It was named the BedBox and it became the perfect travel companion for children up to around 7 years.
Christina & Halvor, the founders of JetKids, is well experienced and educated within the aviation and travel industry.
Christina has education within the travel sector, and has worked many years in jobs related to the industry. Since 2011, she has been the Managing Director of a Norwegian online retail store, specialized in travel with small children. This experience has given her a unique insight and competence. Halvor has a long and broad experience and education within the aviation industry, and has for over 16 years worked for some of the major European airlines. He as a pilot education, and aircraft engineer education, and has served as an airline Captain, instructor and mechanic, mostly on the Boeing B737. But most importantly, Christina & Halvor are also the parents of 3 children, and have first hand experience with the challenges faced
when traveling with children.
Since the launch of BedBox, a lot has happened. We are now a team of dedicated people working here at JetKids in Norway, and JetKids is now a part of the Stokke group. We are excited about joining forces with Stokke and jointly accelerate the growth and bring more innovation to market. Having Stokke onboard gives JetKids access to unique competence and know-how and this will help us bring more exciting and innovative products to market soon ...
